Machine tool is defined as a motion device used for milling, drilling, and other cutting operations. They have simple kinematic chain structure and are very rigid.
The motion properties of a machine tool are similar to those of robots, but are only a part of the machine tool functionality, its other functionalities being process-oriented: controlling flow of coolant, driving peripheral apparatus like conveyor, tool changer, etc., controlling the spindles, correcting for tool wear, etc.
