A Bell is described as a resonant metal object, closed at one end (the crown) and open at the other (the mouth). It is struck on the inside of its soundbow by the clapper which is free to swing in the direction of the bell's motion.

A tower bell is mounted on a headstock which is turned by a wheel. A handbell is mounted on a handle. Bells are usually made of bell-metal (a kind of bronze) although a few are of steel.
