Whisky (Irish and American: whiskey) is defined by the ATF. as an alcoholic distillate from a mash of grain, produced at less than 190° proof, in such as manner that the distillate possesses the taste, aroma and characteristics generally attributed to whisky.

With the exception of corn whisky, it should be stored in oak barrels. It is also called (spelled) whiskey especially in US and Ireland.
