Inlay is described as a decorative design created by embedding pieces of one material into another, forming a plane, as a table top. Mother of pearl taken from the shell of an abalone is mostly used as furniture inlay.

Marquetry is a type of an inlay, generally of wood or ivory, arranged in a distinctive pattern
