GPS, which stands for Global Positioning System, is a navigational system designed and operated by the U. S. Department of Defense (DOD). It is a navigation system based on 24 or more satellites orbiting the earth at an altitude of 12,000 statue miles and providing very precise, worldwide positioning and navigation information 24 hours a day, in any weather. Satnav was the first of these systems, while differential GPS is the most accurate. GPS is also called the NAVSTAR system
