Gillnet is a type of net whose mesh size allows the heads of fish to pass through the openings but the gills get caught, and they are placed vertically in the water.

Many states in the US have banned the use of gillnets in state waters. Like driftnets, gillnets are associated with some bycatch as they are non-selective.
