A Protein is a large biological molecule consisting of one or more chains of amino acids. Proteins perform a vast array of functions within living organisms, including catalyzing metabolic reactions, replicating DNA, responding to stimuli, and transporting molecules from one location to another. Proteins differ from one another primarily in their sequence of amino acids, which is dictated by the nucleotide sequence of their genes, and which usually results in folding of the protein into a specific three-dimensional structure that determines its activity.

In the industrial and industry context, "Portland" typically refers to Portland cement, a type of hydraulic cement that is widely used in the construction industry as a binding material for concrete and mortar. Portland cement is made by heating a mixture of limestone and clay to a high temperature and grinding the resulting clinker to a fine powder. The clinker is then mixed with a small amount of gypsum to regulate the setting time of the cement.

A pigment is a material that changes the color of reflected or transmitted light as the result of wavelength-selective absorption. This physical process differs from fluorescence, phosphorescence, and other forms of luminescence, in which a material emits light. Many materials selectively absorb certain wavelengths of light.
