Air cleaner is in reference to the device that removes airborne contaminants or a device used for the removal of particulate or gaseous impurities from the air. (see related terms: electrical air cleaner , air cleaning).

Air cleaning makes reference to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) control strategy to remove various airborne particulates and/or gases from the air. Particulate filtration, electrostatic precipitation, and gas sorption are the three (3) types of air cleaning strategy most commonly used.
