Alkaline battery means a primary battery which employs alkaline aqueous solution for its electrolyte.

A primary battery (non-rechargeable) is often used in electronics applications requiring heavy currents for long periods of time (dvd/vcd/cd players, radios, etc.). Alkaline batteries are popular in consumer applications since they can deliver 50-100% more total energy than conventional carbon /zinc batteries of the same size.
