An oxide is a chemical compound that contains at least one oxygen atom and one other element in its chemical formula. Metal oxides typically contain an anion of oxygen in the oxidation state of –2 (Example: Carbone Dioxide CO₂). Most of the Earth's crust consists of solid oxides, the result of elements being oxidized by the oxygen in air or in water.

In the industrial and industry context, dioxide refers to a chemical compound containing two oxygen atoms, typically used in industrial processes. Examples of dioxide in industrial uses include:

1. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) - commonly used as a refrigerant in cooling systems and for carbonated drinks
2. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) - used in the production of sulfuric acid and in the purification of natural gas
3. Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) - used in the production of nitric acid and as a component in the manufacture of nitro compounds and dyes
4. Silicon dioxide (SiO₂) - used as a raw material in the production of glass, ceramics, and refractories
5. Aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) - used as a raw material in the production of aluminum and as an abrasive material in grinding and sandblasting.
