Adhesive binding is described as single pages of the book are held together only by adhesive applied to the spine of the text block. This type of binding is sometimes called perfect binding and widely used for paperbacks, manuals, and textbooks.

Adhesive binding methods are used by both publishers and commercial binders. Commercial binders use a double-fan adhesive binding method that fans the pages to one side, then the other, as adhesive is applied. This method greatly improves the durability of the binding. An adhesive binding can be strengthened by notching the spine edge of the pages before applying the adhesive. The purpose of this method is to hold the pieces of broken volumes together and preserve the durability of the book for a long time without losing any of its pages.
