The term roofer (also roof mechanic, roof carpenter) refers to a construction worker who specializes in the construction and maintenance of the roof of a structure. Roofers may be classified into four different types, depending on their specialty.

Shinglers specialize in the installation of shingles, shakes, tiles, and other nail-on products. Hot roofers work with tar-based products. Metal roofers and single-ply roofers (or flat roofers) specialize focus on metal panel and single-ply or foam roofs, respectively. It is not uncommon for roofers to have multiple specialties, however.
