Liquor is a distilled beverage, spirit, or liquor is an alcoholic beverage containing ethanol that is produced by distilling (i.e., concentrating by distillation) ethanol produced by means of fermenting grain, fruit, or vegetables. This excludes undistilled fermented beverages such as beer, wine, and cider. Types of distilled beverages include Vodka, gin, baijiu, tequila, rum, whisky, brandy, slivovitz and soju.

The term hard liquor is used in North America to distinguish distilled beverages from undistilled ones (implicitly weaker).

In the industrial/industry context, "liquor" can refer to various liquids that are used in industrial processes, such as chemical manufacturing and paper production. Here are some examples of industrial applications of liquor:

  1. Chemical Manufacturing: Liquor is often used as a solvent or reagent in chemical manufacturing processes, such as in the production of pharmaceuticals or specialty chemicals.

  2. Paper Production: In the paper production process, liquor is used to dissolve lignin, a natural substance that binds wood fibers together, to produce pulp.

  3. Textile Industry: Liquor is used in the textile industry for various purposes, including dyeing, washing, and finishing fabrics.

  4. Food and Beverage Industry: Liquor is used in the production of alcoholic beverages, such as whiskey, vodka, and rum.

  5. Wastewater Treatment: Liquor is used in wastewater treatment plants to break down organic matter and remove pollutants from wastewater.

Other liquids or solutions that are similar to liquor include:

  1. Solvents: Solvents are liquids that are used to dissolve or dilute other substances, such as paints, adhesives, and cleaning agents.

  2. Acids and Bases: Acids and bases are solutions that are used in various industrial processes, such as in the production of fertilizers, batteries, and pharmaceuticals.

  3. Emulsions: Emulsions are mixtures of two or more liquids that do not normally mix, such as oil and water, that are used in various industrial applications, such as in the production of cosmetics and food products.

  4. Coolants: Coolants are liquids that are used to regulate the temperature of industrial equipment, such as engines and machinery.

  5. Lubricants: Lubricants are liquids that are used to reduce friction and wear between moving parts in industrial equipment, such as engines and machinery.
